    Pine on the Edge

A lone pine tree reaches into the edge of the sunlight on a steep slope in the Eastern Sierra. High up on the side of the valley this pine tree caught my eye. Surrounding it was a sea of quaking aspen trees which had mostly lost their foliage save for one clonal colony directly behind it. This provided golden backdrop for the tree and I set up and captured a shot. While I was hanging out at the area I noticed the creeping edge of the sunlight moving down towards my composition. I decided to hang out and see what happens. The light ended up cutting exactly horizontally across the composition, and I waited until the grove of peak autumn aspens were ablaze with sunlight. This also resulted in a gradient of sunlight from the top to the bottom of the pine. I liked the way it highlighted the tree and further separated it from the background compared to the composition in shadow which is more colorful.

    Whitney approach

The photograph beautifully captures the vast, desolately striking approach to Mt. Whitney across the Owens Valley desert plain, framing the dramatic Sierra Nevada mountain range as an imposing, layered focal point beneath a heavily textured sky. The composition relies on a strong three-tiered horizontal structure, anchoring the viewer with the pale sands and scattered sagebrush of the high desert floor before driving the eye across the flat basin toward the rugged, blue-hued peaks and sweeping weather systems rolling off the crest. A band of deep, low-hanging rain clouds frames the top of the image like a natural vignette, emphasizing the sheer scale of the landscape and the atmospheric intensity of the high-altitude environment you successfully conquered. To give the image an incredibly polished, professional finish, a subtle boost to the shadow details in the foreground brush would bring out richer textures.

Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada, meaning "snowy range" in Spanish, is a mountain range in the region of Andalusia in Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain, Mulhacén at 3,479 m.It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in Europe's most southern ski resort in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little farther, Málaga and Almería.Parts of the range have been included in the Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve. The Sierra Nevada Observatory is located on the northern slopes at 2800 m.

Formation

The Sierra Nevada were formed during the Alpine Orogeny, a mountain-building event that also formed the European Alps to the east and the Atlas Mountains of northern Africa across the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Sierra as observed today formed during the Tertiary Period (65 to 1.8 million years ago) from the collision of the African and Eurasian continental plates.
